Review:

When the Hong Kong opened up years ago, it was the first place in Socorro where you could get Chinese food since the Vagabond closed down years before (I had never eaten there, but the stories people told me varied wildly). The food was pretty good, and it became one of our regular restaurants. When we would game, it was pretty common to see the takeout containers all over the room.

I really liked the Hong Kong Special Soup; a soup with vegetables, wontons, and pieces of thin-cut pork. I would also regularly order the cashew chicken, Mongolian beef, or the garlic chicken. The appetizer menu was really good, and Heidi especially like the egg rolls and the sweet-and-sour pork.

Then, it closed up. My understanding is that there was some kind of disagreement between the owners. It was a dark time as the only source of good Chinese food in about 50 miles disappeared from the world.

Roughly a year after it closed, it reopened again, and there was much rejoicing. We’ve continued to go there over the years, but it has seemed to me that the food isn’t quite as good as it was before. It’s still good, don’t get me wrong, but I wish the quality of the meat was a bit better. Most recently, I’ve been enjoying their fried rice.

As with most Chinese restaurants, the Hong Kong is no slouch when it comes to portions. There’s always ample take-home and, if you come away hungry, it’s your own fault.

My only real complaint with the Hong Kong is that I wish they had a buffet.
