Review:
Heidi heard about Acostas Bed & Breakfast from some friends, and one day when we were bored we decided to drive down to San Antonio to check it out. It was about a block south of the Buckhorn -- not hard to find, but a little off the street. If you werent looking for it, it could be easy to miss.
As mentioned, its a bed & breakfast. I was startled by how small the dining area was -- just enough for a literal handful of people, but it occurred to me that for a B&B, thats about right; you can take your meals to your room.
Heidi ordered the stuffed sopapilla with the chips and salsa appetizer, and I got the combo plate. The kitchen was only five feet away from us and you could hear and see them cooking. Our meals were brought out quickly in only a few minutes.
The waitress was very friendly and she seemed to be genuinely happy to see new people. She chatted with us for a while as she took our order, and she stopped a few times to ask us how the food was. It whole place seemed very much like a family affair, complete with the owners children cleaning up the tables.
Everything was pretty good. The salsa was spicy and flavorful, not just pure heat. My beef burrito, taco, and tamale were really good, and Heidi enjoyed her sopapilla, too. The only reason anything was left on the plates was because we were full.
Looking over the menu, you can order tamales by the dozen or half-dozen for $1 each -- a pretty good deal if my tamale was any indication. They also sell a variety of hamburgers with fries, including chili cheese burgers, tortilla burgers, and taco burgers.
We havent had a chance to go back, but its one of the places I now think of when were in the mood for Mexican food.
