Review:
Siam Cafe is the first Thai place I actually liked. I don't recall who recommended it to me.
Tucked away on San Mateo near the freeway, Siam isn't a large restaurant - maybe twelve tables in all. The staff all seems to be of Asian extraction, and possibly all related. The decor is pleasant, muted greens and spider plants with a few posters on the walls showing tourist spots in Thailand.
The menu is fairly extensive, covering appetizers, salads, fried rice dishes, noodle entrees, and the reason for this review, curries.
The chicken satay appetizer is delicious, comprising skewered white meat chicken marinaded with turmeric and ginger, grilled and served with a seasoned peanut sauce. Almost every appetizer here will come with a side of grated carrot and cucumber slices in a sugar-vinegar dressing with cilantro.
I'm a fan of the Green Curried Catfish, but I've had many of the other types of curry and found them all to be very good. Masaman Curry is a bit toned down from the green and red curries if you're looking for somewhere safe to start. All the curries will come with steamed rice in a rather attractive serving bowl.
Other people I've been there with have made happy noises over the noodles dishes, particularly the Drunken Noodles. The Three-Flavor Fish is a nice alternative to curry that has plenty of flavor. ne complaint I've heard is that the chicken they use for most noodle and fried rice plates is thigh meat, which may appeal to some, but is disliked by a few of my friends.
Drinks are the expected ones, along with Thai iced tea and crysanthemum iced tea, and a few hot teas. The Thai iced tea is highly addictive, being a rich orange-colored creation that is equal parts tea and sweet milk. If you're at all sensitive to spicy dishes, get the Thai iced tea to put the flames out.
